Chpt 1.6: Doing Biology Flashcards
1
Q
Hypothesis
A
a tentative explanation of an observed phenomenon that answers the question why?
2
Q
3 Traits of a good clownfish prediction
A
- Accurately reflects/describes the independent and dependent variables to be studied
- Describes how measurements will be made
- Does NOT need a ‘because’ statement
exp. Green anemones will have a greater frequency of clownfish visitors per hour than white anemones.
3
Q
Prediction
A
a statement of what you expect to observe if your alternative hypothesis is correct in the specific experimental circumstances in which you will test your hypothesis
4
Q
4 traits of a good clownfish hypothesis
A
- Includes info about the initial observation without giving away the independent or dependent variable too explicitly
- Isn’t so specific that it can only be tested in one way
- Has an appropriate ‘because’ mechanism
- Doesn’t use circular logic
exp. Clownfish typically utilize less venomous anemone host species rather than more venomous hosts because their mucus coating provides insufficient protection from the more potent venom.
