Chloride (M) Flashcards
What is the chemical symbol for chloride?
Cl-
What is the characteristic of Cl?
It is the most abundant extracellular anion
What are the fxns of Cl?
It maintains:
1) Osmolality
2) Blood volume
3) Electric neutrality
What are the conditions of abnormal lvls of Cl?
1) Hypochloremia
2) Hyperchloremia
What are the sx considerations for Cl?
1) Serum, heparinized plasma, and urine can be used
2) Hemolysis causes dilutional effect (decreased lvls)
What is the test principle for Cl (/ for Cl determination)?
Hg (SCN)2 + 2CI^- -> HgCI2 + 2SCN^-
3SCN^- + Fe^3+ -> 4 Fe(SCN)3 red complex
What is the method (/ steps) for Cl determination?
1) Label test tubes
a. Blank (/ B)
b. Standard (/ S)
c. Unknown (/ U)
2) Pipette 1,500 uL chloride rgnt to all tubes
3) Add 10 uL of sx to respective tubes and mix
4) Incubate for 5 mins
5) Set the spectrophotometer at 480 nm (semi-automated analyzer can also be used)
What is the normal reference range for Cl?
98 - 106 mEq/L
