physical, sexual, psychological, neglect
4 types of child abuse
- non accidental injuries sustained by a child as a result of physical abuse, usually inflicted by an adult caregiver
- ie multiple fractures of different ages or spiral fractures
- degree of injury inconsistent with the history obtained from caretakers
- commoly dead at home or on arrival to ED
battered child syndrome
- can cause subdural hematoma or direct axonal injury, due to shearing forces
- neck muscles not fully developed, head enlarged, leads to hyperflexion and extension
shaken baby syndrome
-hemorrhage without organization or inflammation

failure of a caregiver to adequately provide for the needs of a child, active or passive, leading for of child maltreatment
child neglect
-efforts aimed at whole populations, raise overall awareness, limited effectiveness in changing individual behaviors
primary prevention
-efforts target high risk individuals or groups, home visit program, work on improving parents lifestyle choices and child rearing behaviors
secondary prevention
poly microbial sepsis is evidence of?
- victims <6yo
- perpetrator acts concerned, not critical of healthcare
- present w/ repeated illness, apnea, seizures, urogenital tract problems
child abuse, munchhausen by proxy
