Are children usually lying when reporting child abuse?
Children don’t expose easily that they have been sexually abused. When they do, it’s usually true, even if it’s vague.
Mandatory reporting to:
- Local law enforcement
- Child protective services or
- Building administrator
When to report abuse:
- Have reason to suspect
- Have observed
- know of have reasonable cause to believe.
Any verbal disclosure by a student must be reported to child protective services or law enforcement immediately.
What must a child abuse written report include?
- Child’s name, address and phone number
- Name & address of parents/ guardians/ care takers
- Evidence of abuse
- Identification of the abuser
- Any other helpful info
- Youths age or DOB
- Location of child
- Explanation of why the abuse
How can you support the child?
- Reassure child that you care, you believe them and is not their fault.
- Let the child know they have the right to be safe and they did the right thing by coming forward.
- tell the child what action you will take to get him/ her help.
- Find out what cold wants from you
- Be honest. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
CHILD ABUSE
Am abused or neglected child whose physical and/or mental welfare is harmed or threatened with harm by non-accidental acts or failures to act by his/ her parent or other person responsible for his/ her welfare.

Someone close with the family
Has easy and consistent access
Someone the child trusts
SEXUAL MISCONDUCT
Any act by any person that involves sexual molestation or exploitation of a youth, including touching, raping, invest, sodomy, prostitution, pornography or lewd and lascivious conduct involving a youth. Any act that makes the youth uncomfortable, physical or non-physical.
PHYSICAL INDICATORS OF CHILD ABUSE
- Itching or pain in genital or anal area
- Difficulty sitting or walking
- Torn clothing
- Torn or bloody underclothes
- Sudden weight loss or gain
- STI’s (Sexually Transmitted Infections)
- Repeated UTI’s in girls
BEHAVIORAL INDICATORS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
- Unexplained fear of person or place or refusal to go to typical activities
- Sudden personality changes
- Sexual reactivily inappropriate for youths age
- Nightmares and changes in sleeping behaviors
- Regressed behaviors like bed wetting
- Self harm, like cutting
- Participating in self defeating or high risk activities like substance abuse
ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
- Substance abuse or alcoholism
- Absence of one parent
- Social isolation of family
- A new adult or teen living at home
NEGLECT
Chronic or repeated failure to provide life necessities to children
