Asthma Inhaler w/ Spacer Steps
- Shake Inhaler
- Attach spacer
- Position Inhaler at students lips
- Place spacer in mouth
- Tell student to breath out
- Squeeze Inhaler and tell cold to inhale as deeply as possible
- Have cold hold breath for 10 seconds
- Repeat in 1-2 minutes or add student order states
- If not working with respiratory distress, call 911
*Never leave student unattended
What is a maintenence Inhaler used for?
To prevent asthma attacks
What is a rescue Inhaler used for?
To stop an emergency asthma attack
Asthma
Chronic lung disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Muscles around the airways (bronchi) tighten and constrict. Airway lining swells and fills with mucus.

Pollen
Respiratory infection
Cold air
Poor air quality
Chemicals and aerosol sprays
Exercise
Strong smells
Tobacco smoke
Dust
Strong emotions (laughing, crying)
Mold
Anxiety
Stress
Asthma Signs & Symptoms
Wheezing
Coughing
Shortness of breath
Chest tightness
Stuffy or runny nose
Nasal flaring
Sore or itchy throat
Behavior changes (less responsive, Irritable, Fearful or worried, Lack of energy)
Retractions (using all trunk muscles to breathe. Skin sticks in against the collar bone, ribs and stomach).
Tripod position (leaning forward to breathe, color changes in lips, nail beds or skin, breathing hard and fast).
Asthma Inhaler Steps
Put on pulsoximeter
1. Take cap off and clear lint from opening
2. Shake 2-5 seconds
3. Prime (push once) if not used in last 48 hours
4. Attach spacer if applicable
5. Sit upright
6. Breathe out all the way
7. Insert Inhaler and seal with lips
8. Take a SLOW, DEEP breath over 3-5 seconds, inhale add much as possible
9. Hold breathe for 10 seconds
10. Wait one full minute between Inhaler
11. Recap
12. Rinse mouth and spit
