What virus causes chickenpox and shingles?
Varicella zoster virus
Prior to the rash in both chickenpox and shingles what may be experienced?
Chickenpox - prodromal e.g. fever, general malaise
Shingles - pain
Who is eligible for the shingles vaccine?
70-80yo
What is shingles?
A reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (that has laid dormant in a dorsal ganglia) that would have been experienced as chickenpox as a child
What is more dangerous chickenpox or shingles?
Shingles
Describe the difference in rash distribution in chickenpox and shingles
Chickenpox - generally limited to trunk, face and scalp
Shingles - limited to a desmosome -> unilateral
What kind of rash do you get?
A blistering, erthymatous rash
How is it managed?
Usually self-limiting
Some may require antiviral treatment
