What is radiographic appearance of Pneumothorax

A

air density is notifiable between visceral pleura and thorax wall. It is often identifiable by a white line in chest.

there will be no lung markings seen to the peripheral of the pneumothorax

No vascular and lung markings.

blackened out appearance of lung

why do we use both insp and exp for pneumothorax

A

small pneumothorax may not be seen in inspiration.

expiration used to show difference caused by pressure. during exp the mediastinum will migrate in the direction of the pathology.

pneumothorax can arise from the rupture of a subpleural bullae or just naturally

What is tension pneumothorax

A

Where air through a slit can only enter and not leave the lungs.

results in over inflation and shift of mediastinum/ vascular compromise.

A

Loss of stability in chest due to multiple rib fractures (rib will be # in two places results in floating rib movement)

A

close proximity to aorta, pulmonary viens, and possible cardiac trauma.

A

if # in first and second rib, maybe aortic tear

if caudal displacement with upper posterior ribs maybe thorasic artery injury
