Chest Regions and Special Systems Flashcards
Cerebellar Hypoplasia
- Proprioception deficits seen in kittens
- Associated with feline distemper infections during pregnancy
Spinal Cord Reflexes
Do not require brain to function
* Patellar
* Triceps
Proprioception
- Placement of limbs in relation to gravity
- Requires integration by spinal cord nerves
Balanoposthitis
Purulent discharge from the prepuce
Crepitus
Crackling or grating sensation noted on movement of a joint
Ascites
Increase in intra-abdominal fluid
Atelectasis
Consolidation or collapse of lungs
* due to air pockets being filled with fluid
Bronchovessicular Sounds
Sounds produced by air moving through the alveoli and bronchioles
Turbulance
Chaotic change in pressure and velocity of flow between normal mitral valve and diseased fibrotic valve
* mitral = lower pitch, broader size
Audible Cardiac Murmurs
Created as blood flows through fibrotic thickened heart valves*
* best heard near sternum, 4th or 5th intercostal space on left side
* creates turbulence
Normal Heart Rate
Higher than 230 suggests cardiac arrhythmias
* Dog = 80-120 bpm
* Cat = 160-200 bpm
Popliteal
Palpable, accessible lymph nodes
* located caudal to the stifle
Other Lymph Nodes
Palpable when enlarged
* Axillary (chest wall)
* Prescapular
* Inguinal*
* cranial and medial to femur area
Kennel Cough
- Related to Bordetella Bronchiseptica
- Gram negative bacteria
- Leads to tracheitis
Signs of Tracheitis
- Harsh breathing sounds
- Cough produced by pressure on trachea*
*tracheal reflex
