Chemistry: Naming Acids Flashcards
What are the two types of acids?
Binary Acids and Oxy-Acids
Describe binary acids.
Contains hydrogen and one other element.
What type of acid contains hydrogen and one other element?
Binary Acids
Describe oxy-acids.
Contains hydrogen and a poly-atomic ion.
What type of acid contains hydrogen and a poly-atomic ion?
Oxy-Acids
What are the three steps to naming a binary acid?
- Put the prefix “hydro” first 2. Name the second element and change the ending to “ic” 3. Add the word “acid” to the end (as a second word). ex. hydrochloric acid
What type of acid do you name by adding the prefix “hydro” and changing the ending of the element to “ic”?
Binary Acids
What are the three steps to naming an oxy-acid?
- Recognize the polyatomic ion and use the name as the root word. 2. If the ending of the ion is “-ate” it is changed to “-ic”. If the ending of the ion is “-ite” it is changed to “ous”. 3. Add the word “acid” to the end (as a second word).
What type of acid do you name by changing the ending of the ion?
Oxy-Acids
What is the chemical formula for hydrobromic acid?
HBr
What is the chemical formula for hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the chemical formula for phosphoric acid?
H3PO4
What is the chemical formula for sulfurous acid?
H2SO3
What is the name of HF?
hydrofluoric acid
What is the name of HI?
hydroiodic acid
