On a compound light microscope, what is the revolving nosepiece?
This is the part that holds two or more objective lenses and can be rotated easily to change power.
On a compound light microscope, what are the objective lenses?
The objective lenses are the lenses on the revolving nosepiece. There are usually 3 or 4 with powers of 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x.
On a compound light microscope, what is the stage?
The stage is the flat platform where you place your slides. Stage clips hold the slides in place. If your microscope has a mechanical stage, you will be able to move the slide around by turning two knobs. One makes it move left and right, the other moves it up and down.
On a compound light microscope, what is the condenser lens?
The condenser lens focuses the light onto the specimen.
On a compound light microscope, what is the diaphragm?
Many microscopes have a rotating disk under the stage. This diaphragm has different sized holes and is used to vary the intensity and size of the cone if light that is projected upward into the slide.
On a compound light microscope, what is the lamp?
The light source is a steady light source (110 volts) used in place of a mirror. If your microscope has a mirror, it is used to reflect light from an external splint source up through the bottom of the stage.

The base is the bottom of the microscope, used for support.
On a compound light microscope, what is the fine adjustment knob?
The fine adjustment knob fine tunes to focus and increases the detail of the specimen.
On a compound light microscope, what is the coarse adjustment knob?
The coarse adjustment knob brings the specimen into general focus.
On a compound light microscope, what is the specimen?
The specimen is object being examined. Most specimens are mounted on slides, flat rectangles of glass.
On a compound light microscope, what is the arm?
The arm supports the tube and connects it to the base.
On a compound light microscope, what is the ocular lens?
The ocular lens is the lens at the top that you look through. They are usually 10x or 15x power.
On a compound light microscope, what is the tube?
The body tube connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses.
