Chemistry And Cells Flashcards
Ions
An atom/group of atoms with electrical charge
Cation
Ion with positive charge
Anion
Ion with negative charge
How are ions formed?
When an election is lost or gained
(Losing an electron = cation; Gaining an electron = anion)
What’s an electrolyte?
Ions dissolved in water that conduct electric currents
Electrolyte imbalance
Blood concentration of the electrolyte becomes too high or too low
Ionic bond
Cations and anions bind together using electrostatic interactions
Covalent bond
Electrons are shared between two atoms
Nonpolar vs. polar covalent bonds
Nonpolar = electrons are equally shared
Polar = electrons are unequally shared
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together
Hydrogen bonds
Weak intermolecular attraction between polar molecules
inorganic vs organic molecules
inorganic = molecules without carbon
organic = contains carbon
examples of organic molecules
macromolecules
- lipids
- nucleic acids
- carbohydrates
- proteins
neutralization
acidic/basic solution becomes neutral; adding base to acid, or adding acid to base
buffer
something that prevents pH change
