Chemical Agents and their mode of action Flashcards
check on learning
Affect lipid rich plasma membranes. Causes cells so leak its contents.
Phenols
Denatures proteins and dissolves lipids. Causes disruption of cellular membranes
Alcohols
Mode of action not exactly known. Is surface active agent (decrease surface tension). Probably attacks plasma membrane.
Quaternary ammonium compounds
Cross link functional groups of proteins (-SH, -OH, -NH2, -COOH).
Aldehydes
Replaces protein function groups (-SH, -COOH, -OH) with alkyl groups (Alkylation).
Gaseous agents:
Ethylene oxide
Mode of action not known. Thought to be interaction with amino acids and proteins
Halogens:
Iodine
Mode of action not exactly known. Oxidizing agent. May damage cellular enzymes
Halogens:
Chlorine
Oxidize cell components (Duh!)
Oxidizing agents:
Ozone
Hydrogen peroxide
Combine with sulfhydryl groups (-SH) to denature proteins
Heavy metals:
Silver
Mercury
Copper
