caste system (or “closed” system)
any form of stratification in which people are categorized and ranked bu characteristics over which they have no control and that they usually cannot change
class system
a system of social stratification in which people are ranked on the basis of achieved characteristics, such as a merit, talent, ability, or past performance
social stratification
the systematic process of ranking people on a scale of social worth such that the ranking affects life chances in unequal ways
chance
characteristics and experiences not the result of will, choice, or effort
context

choice
the conscious act of choosing around a range of possible behaviors, appearances or paths
objectified cultural capital
consists of physical and material objects that a person owns outright or has direct access to. theses objects have monetary values that is tied to others willingness to buy, sell, own, or hold on to them
embodied cultural capital
consist of everything that has been consciously and unconsciously internalized through the socialization process
institutionalized cultural capital
consists of anything (material or nonmaterial) recognized as important to success in a particular social settings
income
the money a person earns, usually in an annual basis through salary or wages
wealth
the combined value of a persons income and other material assets such as stocks, real estate, and savings minus debt
finance aristocracy
those who lived in obvious luxury among masses of staving, low-paid, and unemployed workers including bankers and stockholders seemingly detached from the world of “work”
negative privileged property class
Weber’s category for the people completely lacking in skills, property, or employment or who depend on seasonal or sporadic employment; they constitute there very bottom of the class system
positively privileged property class
Weber’s category for the people at they very top of the class system
status group
Weber’s term for an amorphous group of people held together both by virtue of a lifestyle that has come to be expected of all” all those who with to belong to the circle”
political parties
according to Weber, “organizations oriented toward the planned acquisition of social power and toward influencing social action no matter what its content may be”
social prestige
a level of respect or admiration for a status apart from any person who happens to occupy it
esteem
the reputation that someone occupying an ascribed or achieved status has earned from people who know and observe the person
urban underclass
the group of families and individuals in inner cities who live “ outside the mainstream of the American occupational system and who consequently represent the very bottom of the economic hierarchy”
