Chapters 6 and 8 Flashcards
the day of rest and worship; it is celebrated on Saturday by the Jews and on Sunday by Christians.
Sabbath
What does it mean that God is eternal?
- He is outside of time
- He created the world, the sun, moon, stars – all that is used to measure time
- God has made time holy
- In the fullness of time, God became man in the Divine Person of Jesus Christ
- Jesus’ time on earth has changed how we measure time – BC and AD – and given us holy days and devotional hours
The Sabbath Day
- Seventh day of the week
- God made the Sabbath holy
- We see this in Creation, when God rested on the seventh day
- This is the day the Jewish people honor and set aside for rest and worship of God
- As Christians, we honor Sunday, the Lord’s Day, because it is the day of the Resurrection
- We honor Sunday and celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus by participating in the Mass

How do we make Sunday a holy day?
- We must choose not to work and to set aside this day for God
- We must decide how we will make Sunday holy every week
How should we prepare for Sunday mass?
- We should pray, so that we can participate fully at Mass
- We should begin our Eucharistic fast
- We should dress appropriately – modestly
- We should enter the Church reverently and be prepared to pay close attention at Mass
- We should listen attentively, participate in the responses, sing along at the appropriate times, and prayerfully follow along.
certain days, besides Sundays, when Catholics are required to take part in Holy Mass
Holy Days of Obligation
communal worship, public worship
external worship
external worship
- We are composed of a body and a soul, so we must worship God with our bodies and souls
- We need external worship to pray as true humans, as a community of believers
- We need the witness of our fellow Catholics and to serve as witnesses to others
- We worship publicly as witnesses that God has the first place in our lives
- Private devotion does not replace external worship.
- We have been commanded to attend Mass on Sundays
