What is conversion?
We are all called to conversion, to a life of holiness
•We are called to die to sin and to unite ourselves closely with God
•We have many aids in this process: Sacraments, prayer/grace, angels and saints, examples of saints, intercessors, the guidance of the Church
How does the Sacrament of Penance help our conversion?
Sacrament of Penance gives us a new beginning so that we can live in union with God.
What are the steps to a good Confession?
- Examination of Conscience – know your sins
- Sorrow for sins
- Decision to not sin again
- Confession to a priest
- Receive and do your penance
What are the requirements to be worthy of reception of Communion?
- Be free from mortal sin
- Fast for one hour before receiving Communion
- Know whom you are about to receive
- Receive Communion reverently
- Offer thanksgiving
What are the fruits of conversion?
We will be living in friendship with God •We keep his commandments •We pray •We do good works •We receive the sacraments •We are joyful
What is a saint? What is a canonized saint?
Saints are holy souls united with God in heaven
Canonized Saints are holy souls united with God in heaven whom the Church has infallibly defined to be saints and venerates as saints in her liturgical calendar
What are the three categories within the Communion of Saints?
- Church Militant the faithful souls on earth striving to get to heaven
- Church Suffering the holy souls in purgatory, who are assured of heaven but are being purified and prepared for their entry into heaven
- Church Triumphant includes the saints, the canonized and the angels
someone who pleads or prays for another
intercessor
a special saint chosen to intercede for a particular person or group
Patron Saint
What are the three forms of worship and/or adoration and/or veneration and to whom do they apply?
- Latria worship of God
- Dulia veneration, or honoring, the saints because they are friends and heirs of God
- Hyperdulia veneration reserved for Mary alone because she is the most perfect saints, the Mother of God and without sin. She is the highest honored saint
Why do we pray to the saints?
We really are asking the saints to pray with us and for us, just as we would any other friend or family member. We know that by asking a saint for help, that saint will take our prayer to God. God alone is the one who answers our prayers.
What is intercession?
Intercessory prayer is a form of supplication or asking
How do we use intercession?
- We ask for things of God on behalf of another
- We are often intercessors, for example, at Mass during the Prayers of the Faithful
- We often ask people to pray for our needs, as well
- So too, the saints can pray for us, and we know that they are powerful intercessors before God. They are united with him for all eternity, in his friendship.
- We know that their intercession has already worked miracles.
