What is required by the 1st Commandment?
The First Commandment commands us to believe in God, to hope in him, and to love him above all else

Blessing oneself with holy water
Making the Sign of the Cross

Kneeling with folded hands

Carrying something in precession
Receiving Communion on the tongue or hand

Why do we honor and pray to saints?
- We worship and adore God only – not saints.
- We pray for the intercession of saints in our needs.
- We show reverence to God, the saints and all holy things and places.
What is forbidden by the 1st Commandment?
The first commandment forbids:
- heresy
- apostasy
- voluntary doubt
- deliberate ignorance of God’s truth
- despair
- presumption
- idolatry
- indifference to God
- hatred of God
- superstition
- irreligious behavior.

a love that is ready to let go of things when God asks it of us

- Do we work hard for the things we have? Do we deserve them?
- Are our possessions a gift from God?
- Is it hard to give up our possessions? Why?
- Did the rich young man love God? How much?
- What is a detached love? How can we have a detached love for our possessions?

- Man could not be reconciled with God

- No offering of man could make up for it

Sacrifice of the Mass
•The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is made present through the Mass
•On the cross Jesus is the priest – the one offering the sacrifice – and the victim – the one being sacrificed.
•Jesus is the priest through the person of the priest
•Jesus is the victim through the bread and wine
•The Mass is the same sacrifice as the cross in a different manner
–Cross is bloody manner
–Mass is unbloody manner
