Chapters 11-14 Flashcards
a Swiss naturalist that studied glaciers and fossils
Louis Agassiz
Longest river in the U.S.
Missouri
Longest river in the world:
Nile
the primary factor in giving ocean currents their life
temperature differences
first textbook about the ocean
Geography of the Sea
lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere
solid, liquid, gas
What causes ocean currents?
Surface water is cooled in polar regions. Cold water sinks (more dense than warm water), and warm water from the equator flows out to take its place.
the origin of this river is snow in Africa’s great central highlands
Nile
caused the formation of the Great Lakes and an ice sheet all the way to the Mediterranean Sea
Ice Age
flows south to north almost in a straight line
Nile
developed the Theory of Evolution and believed the surface features of the earth were caused by natural forces, not Noah’s flood
Charles Darwin
Explain what caused deep grooves in solid rock in valley walls, and caused boulders to do the southern plains far from the mountains of their origin.
Glaciers move, pressing boulders against valley walls, carving deep grooves. Glaciers carried the boulders to the southern plain, leaving them as they melted
its source is in Tibet
Yangtze
River that carries the largest volume of water in the world.
Amazon
along its banks are pyramids
