CHapter4. Tour of a cell Flashcards
prokaryotic cell
Lacks nucleoid
no membrane enclosed organelles
smaller, simpler
Eukaryotic (animal cells)
Has a nucleus
has organelles suspended in liquid cytosol
larger, more complex
Endomembrane systems includes
the ER, golgi Apparatus, lysosomes, and vesicles.
Nucleus
control center of the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum:
main manufacturing facilities in a cell. Produces molecules, connected to nuclear envelope. Two types: Smooth and rough ER.
smooth ER
Lacks Surface ribosomes, produces lipidS, SteroidS, and helps the liver cells detoxify circulating drugs.
Rough ER
Makes more membrane, ribosomes that stud outside of the membrane. ribosomes dock here. Proteins are completed inside.
Lysosomes
contain digestive enzymes and break down worn-out organelles.
Golgi apparatus
Located in edomembrane system. work with ER, receives, refines, stores, and distribution chemical products of cell.e. Lysosomes (Bubbles of digestive enzymes surrounded by membranes)
Mitochondria
Where ATP is made
Chloroplast
In plant cells, where photosynthesis occurs
DNA is bound to proteins. forming a complex known as
Chromatin
A cell has the following molecules and structures: enzymes, DNA, ribosomes, plasma membrane, and mitochondria. It could be a cell from;
plant or animal
If a toxin, such as bacterial toxin, destroys ribosomes, what cellular activity will be affected first?
protein synthesis
Select the cell type that is not correctly matched with the type of predominate organelle it would need to perform its unique function:
All of the cells above are correctly matched with the predominant type of organelle they would need to perform their unique function
