Why do people abuse children?
It is a means of personal control and problem solving
How was child abuse discovered?
By a doctor named Dr. Caffey, who realized that bruises and fractured bones were not an accident when it came to children
Explain Dr. Kempe’s “The Battered Child Syndrome”?
It is an article published that explained that parents and caretakers would batter their children.
It lead to public awareness and media attention.
What do citizens have to do when they suspect child abuse?
They NEED to report it
What at the organization that handles child abuse cases?
DYP (Director of Youth Protection)
What are examples of physical abuse?
Beating, biting, burning, kicking, assaulting, drowning, etc..
What is FGM?
Female Genital Mutation
What are the results of child abuse?
Bruising, broken bones, scars, internal injuries, etc..
Explain sexual abuse.
Exploiting a child, sexually, for ones own gratification
What are some examples of sexual abuse?
Intercourse, fondling, rape, sodomy, porn, involving a child in prostitution, etc..
What is emotional abuse?
Attack on emotional development and sense of sense of self
What are some examples of emotional abuse?
Criticism, belittling, insulting, rejecting, no love, support or guide, verbal threats, social isolation, intimidation, terrorizing, unreasonable demands
What is the most common form of child abuse?
Neglect
What is neglect?
Failing to provide a child with what they need to physical, psychological and emotional development and wellbeing
What is ‘Intergenerational Transmission of Abuse’?
Abused children become abusive parents
What is ‘Munchausen by Proxy’?
Exaggeration, fabrication of physical or psychological behaviour and mental problems
Why do parents apply “Munchausen by Proxy’?
To gain gratification
What are the long term effects of ‘Munchausen by Proxy’?
Learning disorders, drop, outs, crime and violence, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, STD, PTSD, depression, etc..
How can we recognize abuse?
The child’s behaviour suddenly changes, no help is given by the parents, the child is struggling at school, the child is compliant, passive and withdrawn
How can we recognize abuse on the part of the parent?
There is little concern for the child, they blame the child for everything, asks teacher to sue harsh punishment, children are seen as bad and worthless
What are the risks that cause children to be abused?
Preterm birth, birth anomalies, low birth weight, exposure to toxins, disability, chronic illness, antisocial, child aggression, behavior problems, ADD, ADHD
What are some abusive parental personality factors?
Poor impulsive control, pressure, anxiety, insecurity, trust issues, history of abuse, insecure attachment, substance abuse, lack of knowledge of child development
What are some social/emotional factors of abusive parents?
Low SES, stressful life events, lack of ressources, unemployment, homelessness, social isolation, no support, dangerous neighbourhood
What is the frequency of maltreatment?
The rates have gone down since 1990 but a lot of child maltreatment isn’t reported
What are the consequences of child maltreatment?
Détestation and long lasting consequences, social deficits, economic consequences
