What is communication?
All means by which information is transmitted between a sender and a receiver
What is language?
a sophisticated system of communication, it is rule based
How do you define a disorder?
disturbance of normal functioning of the mind or body
What does a stand for?

What does dys stand for?

vocal articulation
What does phasia mean?
speechless
What does phagia mean?
eating
What does praxia mean?
skilled movement
What does phonia mean?

What does oto mean?

What does aural mean?

What does the prevalence of communication disorders mean?
the number/percentage of people within a specified population who have a particular disorder or condition at a given time
What are the three types of therapy services?
habilitation: helping someone develop or improve a skill
rehabilitation: helping someone regain a skill that has been lost
compensatory: help an individual adapt or deal with a situation, there is usually no cure
Compare organic and functional disorders.
Organic disorders the cause of it is known
Functional disorder there is no known diagnosis for the disorder
What are speech disorders?
This would be having trouble saying sounds, stuttering, or voice problems
What are speech sound disorders?
An impairment in the way speech sounds and is produced, it can be often secondary to an issue such as a cleft palate
What is dysphonia?
A voice disorder that causes poor voice quality
What are motor speech disorders?
Dysarthria: weakness, spasticity, or incoordination alters the ability to produce clear speech; ex: basal ganglia, cerebellum, cranial and spinal nerves
Apraxia: speech motor planning and programming; effects specific part of Broca’s area in the motor strip
What are fluency disorders?
interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies
What is aphasia?
An acquired language disorder, it can affect all aspects of language but it does NOT affect intelligence
What is developmental language disorder?
affects learning and using language, there is no known cause but it is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder
What is dysphagia?
Difficulty swallowing food or liquid
Describe infant hearing loss.
It is a genetic disorder, and the most common birth condition in the US
What is the ringing in the ears called?
Tinnitus
What are vestibular disorders?
Disorders that affect the body’s balance system, can affect the inner ear
What is the semi circular canal?
The part of the ear that tells you where you are
