What are the struggles of third-party candidates?
Slim chance of success, major parties absorb some of the movement of the third party. Voters may agree with a third party but feel it would be a thrown away vote.
What are the problems with parties?
For a candidate to get a nomination, he must be very ideological to get support from delegates. However, the average voter is much more moderate.
What is the median voter theory?
Most voters are median and aren’t heavily liberal or conservative. In US the strategy for winning involves fighting over median voter.
What is public opinion?
People’s views about issues, situations, and public figures.
What are the common issues with public opinion?
Public opinion can often be uninformed and inconsistent.
What is the influence of family on one’s political views?
60% of adults have same identification as parents. If not, typically identify as independent.
What party do women tend to associate with?
Women tend to be more liberal than men.
How does education impact one’s political ideology?
Lowest levels of education are more liberal, people with advanced degrees are more liberal than those with associates or bachelor’s degrees.
How does race and ethnicity impact one’s political ideology?
Blacks are overwhelmingly democrats, whites more likely to be republicans, Latino and other minorities lean democrat.
What is political ideology?
Coherent and consistent set of beliefs of who should rule and what policies rules ought to pursue.
What are the four ideological labels?
Pure liberal, pure conservative, populist, and libertarian.
What do pure liberals believe in are who are they?
Government should regulate business, reduce economic inequality, allow abortions. Tend to be young, college educated, Jewish or non-religious.
What do pure conservatives believe in and who are they?
Government should cut back on welfare programs, taxes low, allow market to regulate business, punish bad behavior. More likely to be older higher income, white, live in Midwest.
What do libertarians believe in and who are they?
Government should have little interaction in our lives. More likely to be young, college educated, white, higher income, no religion, and live in the west.
What do populists believe in and who are they?
Government should reduce economic inequality, regulate personal conduct. More likely to be older, poorly educated, low income, religious, female, live in the south or Midwest.
