What are the two arguments as to why there’s low voter turnout?
1.Non-voters are to blame; they are ignorant and apathetic.
2. The system is to blame. Candidates only sling mud.
Why do some say low voter turnout IS okay?
high turnout would signify tension in the country. Increasing numbers would lead to more uninformed voters.
Why do some say low voter turnout IS NOT okay?
Active voters are wealthier, whiter, older, and better educated than the voting age public. Don’t seriously address issues.
How does voter turnout rate differ among different population segments?
It differs considerably across economic and social groups.
How does schooling impact voter turnout?
The more schooling one has, the more likely they are to vote. This is the best indicator of participation. Education gives confidence and awareness of public affairs.
How does income effect voter turnout?
The higher the income, the more likely to vote. Positively correlated to age and education. Poor may feel alienated from the system.
How does race impact voter turnout?
Whites vote at higher rates than blacks and Latinos. At same educational and income levels, blacks vote at a higher rate. Hispanics have low voting rates, possibly language barriers.
How does age impact voter turnout?
As people age, they are more likely to vote. Ages 18-24 typically have lowest voting rate.
What are the different forms of political participation?
voting, donating money to campaign, attending local political meeting, contacting an elected official, protest.
How does presidential elections compare to congressional elections?
Presidential election is more competitive than congressional election and there is lower turnout in non-presidential elections.
What are the needs of a person running for president?
Significant name recognition, raise money, campaign organization.
What politicians have an advantage in running for congress and what margin of victory do most candidates win by?
Incumbents (reelection candidate) have a huge advantage, usually 90+% win.
How are congressional districts drawn and who draws them?
They’re drawn on population and state legislatures draw them.
What is Gerrymandering?
Drawing district lines so one party has a better chance at winning.
