What is the difference between a primary and general election?
Primary is within party and determines number of delegates and general election is between parties.
What is a closed primary?
Registered voters only.
What state is the first primary and what state is the first caucus?
New Hampshire is first primary, and Iowa is first caucus.
Why do states race to have the sooner primary?
For greater news coverage of the state and so the candidates visit the state.
What is Super Tuesday and are all primaries on the same day?
Super Tuesday is when states choose party delegates and primaries occur on different days.
What is a caucus and does Wyoming have one?
A multistage process to determine a presidential nominee. There is a series of meetings where public discusses candidates. Wyoming has a caucus.
What is the convention?
Know who will win the nomination. Delegates on a proportional basis.
What is the general election?
When states for vote electors for each state and in congressional elections, winners of the primaries running against one another.
What is the electoral college?
The real election for president. Can win popular vote but lose in electoral college. Meet in December after November general election.
How many votes are there in the electoral college and how many are needed to win?
538 electoral votes, need 270 to win.
How many electoral votes does California get vs how many Wyoming gets?
California gets 55 electoral college votes and Wyoming gets 3.
What is a faithless elector?
A member of the electoral college that does not for vote for whom they pledged.
What are the roles of money in running for office?
It’s expensive to run for office and concerns that money is corrupting.
What are Political Actions Committee’s (PAC’s) and what is the limit they can spend?
Raise and spend money on behalf of a candidate, there are thousands of them. $5000 limit.
What did the election campaign act of 1974 do?
Limits money donated and allowed presidential campaigns to be funded through federal money.
