Why did the Puritans come to America?
- The aggressive anti-Puritan policies of Charles I- exchange their status as a harassed minority for self government
- Americas could serve as a true model for the Church of England- make the Church of England thoroughly Protestant

What did Puritans fear the most and how did they address it?
-Deviance from the singular truth of God was a constant danger; they pass laws to promote conformity
-those that felt lead others astray in questions of belief were punished or expelled

Southern-status based on land ownership, arrived as indentured servants, government based on economics
Northern-status based on church membership, arrived as families, government based on faith and God

Why did Massachusetts Puritans adopt the halfway covenant?
-Founders children failed to experience the conversion that qualified them for church membership; couldn’t baptize their children
-church membership declined

Result: by 1700 all colonial trade was under royal supervision
Describe the two main characteristics of Puritans
-sought to eliminate church hierarchy and do away with the rituals of Catholic worship
-emphasize personal relationships with God through Bible study, prayer, introspection
