Chapter 9.2 Flashcards
What does the salt bridge do?
Provides an electrical connection between the two half-cells in a voltaic cell to complete the circuit, allowing ions to flow into our out of the half-cells to balance out the charges in the half-cells
What does a salt bridge usually contain?
A concentrated solution of an ionic salt such as KCl
Anode
The electrode at which oxidation occurs
What is the negative electrode in a voltaic cell?
Anode
Cathode
The electrode at which reduction occurs
What is the positive electrode in a voltaic cell?
Cathode
Electrolysis
The breaking down of a substance by the passage of electricity through it
Electrolyte
A solution or molten compound that will conduct electricity, with decomposition at the electrodes as it does so
What do electrolytes contain?
Ions that are free to move towards the electrodes in electrolysis
Why don’t ionic solids conduct electricity when solid?
The ions are held tightly in the lattice structure and are therefore not free to move
