Chapter 4.2 Flashcards
When does covalent bonding occur?
When atoms share electrons
What is a covalent bond?
An electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the atoms that are bonded
Lone pairs
The pairs of electrons in the outer shell of atoms that aren’t involved in the covalent bonds
List the strength of single, double and triple bonds from weakest to strongest
Single bonds < double bonds < triple bonds
Electronegativity
A measure of the attraction of an atom in a molecule for the electron pair in the covalent bond of which it is a part
Why don’t noble gases have electronegativity values?
They don’t form compounds
What kinds of bonds do atoms with similar electronegativities form?
Covalent bonds
What kinds of bonds do atoms with widely different electronegativities form?
Ionic bonds
What can the difference in Electronegativity between two atoms be a guide for?
How ionic or covalent the bond between the two atoms is likely to be
What is the electronegativity difference value that separates covalent and ionic bonds?
