Chapter 1.1 Flashcards
Element
A pure substance that contains only one type of atom
Atom
The smallest part of an element that can still be recognized as that element
Compound
A pure substance formed when two or more elements combine chemically
Dictates how something reacts in a chemical reaction
Chemical properties of the substance
Properties of a substance such as melting point, density, hardness, electrical conductivity
Physical properties
The four state symbols
(s) = solid
(l) = liquid
(g) = gas
(aq) = aqueous
Mixture
Contains two or more substances mixed together
Homogenous mixture
Has the same composition throughout the mixture and consists of only one phase
Heterogeneous mixture
Does not have uniform composition and consists of separate phases
