Chapter 4.3 Flashcards
Coordinate covalent bond
A type of covalent bond in which both electrons come from the same arom
Resonance structures
The individual structures of a molecule that differ only in the position of the double bond
Valence shell electron pair repulsion theory (VSEPR)
Pairs of electrons in the valence shell of an atom repel each other and will therefore take up positions in space to minimize these repulsions
Order of repulsion strength for pairs of electrons from strongest to weakest
Lone pair-lone pair > lone pair-bonding pair > bonding pair-bonding pair
Polar bond
When the electronegativity difference between two atoms covalent it bonded together results in the electrons lying more towards one atom than the other
How can a molecule be non-polar if the individual bonds are polar?
If the symmetry of the molecule causes the dipole moments of the individual bonds to cancel out
Dipole moment
The direction in which an electron is closer to in a covalently bonded molecule
Allotrope
A different form of the same element
