Race
Biological differences that are defined as socially significant and are presumed to divide the pop. Into genetically distinct subgroups
Ethnicity
Cultural differences between humans that are defined as socially significant and are presumed to separate the pop into socially distinct subgroups
Contact hypothesis
Interracial contact between people of equal status will cause them to become less prejudiced and abandon old stereotypes
Affirmative action
Active recruitment of minority group members for jobs, promotions, and durations potential
Racial formation
Sociohistorical process in which racial categories are created, inhibited, transformed and destroyed
Prejudice
Preconceived and unjustified judgement of individual based on their membership in a particular group
Stereotyped
Unreliable generalizations about all members of a group that don’t recognize individual difference within the group
Implicit biases
Automatic and unconscious association of fake with a particular group or pop
Discrimination
Denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or other reasons
Institutional discrimination
Denial of opportunities and equal rights to some people as part of the normal operation of society
Racism
Belief that one race is supreme and all others are innately inferior
Color-blind racism
Uses principle of race neutrality to perpetuate a racially unequal status quo
Hate crimes
Criminal offense committed because of an offenders bias against an individual based on race, religion, ethnicity, nation origin, or sexual orientation
Racial profiling
Action by an authority initiated based on race, ethnicity, or national origin rather than on someone’s behavior
Minority group
Subordinate group whose members lack access to and control over valued resources in a society
Genocide
Deliberate, systematic killing of entire people/nation
Expulsion
Systematic removal of a group of people from a society
Amalgamation
Process through which a majority and a minority group combine to form a new group
Assimilation
Process by which a person forsakes their own cultural tradition to become part of a different culture
Segregation
Physical separation of two groups of people in terms of residence, workplace, and social event
Apartheid
Republic of South Africa form of segregation by restricting movement of Blacks and non-whites by means of widespreading system
Pluralism
Mutual respect for one another’s culture amount the various groups in a society and allows minorities to express their own cultures without prejudice
Black power
Political philosophy promoted in 1960s called for the creation of Black controlled political and economic institutions
Symbolic ethnicity
Ethnic identity that emphasis concerns as ethic food/political issues rather than deeper ties to one’s ethnic heritage
One drop rule
Principle that if one person had even one black ancestor, no matter has many generations back, the person was labeled as black
Passing
People whose genetic ancestry and family history convey membership in one racial category but are perceived to belong to another race in the eyes of others
