Chapter 9: Organization of the Motor System Flashcards
What is a tract?
An extensive collection of axons that course together throughout the central nervous system.
What is the function of the lateral tract?
Is involved in the voluntary movement of limbs, especially the distal muscles (hands and fingers).
What is the function of the basal ganglia?
It prevents unwanted movements. It also modulates the speed and magnitude of movements.
What are some disorders that are associated with the basal ganglia?
Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.
What is the function of the Cerebellum?
Coordination of movement and balance.
What is Parkinson’s disease?
Degeneration of the negrostriatal system. Includea symptoms of muscular rigidity and postural instability.
What is Huntington’s Chorea disease?
The degeneration of the neostriatum. The symptoms of this disease include uncontrollable movements, especially jerky limb movements.
