Chapter 7: Imaging the Brain's Activity Flashcards
what is a PET Scan?
A functional neuroimaging technique that measures metabolic activity (such as glucose).
What are some examples of structural/anatomical neuroimaging?
CAT scans and MRI scans
What is a CAT scan?
A scan that examines brain anatomy and is more invasive than an MRI.
What is an MRI?
A scan that provides a better picture of brain anatomy compared to CAT scans. It also takes longer than CAT scans to finish.
What are some examples of functional neuroimaging?
PET scans
fMRI scan
What are fMRI scans?
Scan that shows the function of the brain
What techniques record or stimulate the brain?
EEG
TMS
What is an EEG?
A technique that records electrical signals detected by electrodes.
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Is a technique that allows brain stimulation through the skull. Is often used in resistant depression.
What is a MEG?
A technique that detects the brain’s weak magnetic field with detectors placed outside the skull.
