Chapter 9 (Notes) Flashcards
The __________ and _________ use the Spaulding Classification System in their guidelines and standards
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
Three Spaulding Categories
- Critical items (Directly into the bloodstream) (Sterilized)
- Semi-critical items (Contact with intact mucous membranes (High-Level Disinfection)
- Non-critical items (Contact with unbroken skin) (Low/Intermediate Level Disinfection
Quats
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Low-level disinfectant)
Phenolics
Intermediate/Low disinfectant containing phenol
Chlorine
intermediate-level disinfectant commonly used for treatment of water and sewage. (Highly Corrosive)
Iodophors
buffered iodines that are also members of the halogen family. Iodophors are used both as antiseptics and disinfectants.
Glutaraldehydes
HLD used for semi-critical devices, such as endoscopes and ultrasonic probes.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde (OPA)
HLD that provides a fast and effective way to disinfect a wide range of instruments
Hydrogen Peroxide
broad-spectrum HLD that is available in different concentration
Peracetic Acid
HLD in five minutes at room temperature. Some dilutions are designed to be used in manufacturer-specific automated endoscope reprocessor (AER) as a sterilant only.
Pasteurizer
Thermal disinfection using water temperatures of 150 to 170F (65 to 77C)
