Chapter 9: Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of the relatively constant environment
What is feedback?
something is detected by a receptor, signal sent to processing centre, coordinates specific response, conveyed to effector and homeostasis is restored
What is negative feedback?
Monitors the the environmental conditions
What are the five receptors?
Chemoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, photoreceptors, thermoreceptors and nociceptors.
What are the two effectors?
muscles and glands
What is a chemoreceptor?
A detector which detects chemical stimulus
What is a mechanoreceptor?
A detector which detects physical stimulus
What is a photoreceptor?
A detector which detects light stimulus
What is a thermoreceptor?
A detector which detects change in temperature stimulus
What is a noiceptor?
A detector which detects specifically signals from the outside of the body. (e.g. pain, pressure)
What is a endocrine gland?
A gland which secretes substances into the bloodstream
What is a exocrine gland?
A gland which secretes substances into an external surface
What is metabolism?
The sum of chemical reaction to maintain life
What is catabolic reactions?
A reaction that involves breakdown of complex molecules
What is anabolic reactions?
A reaction which builds up complex molecules
