Chapter 11: Hormonal Homeostatic control pathways Flashcards
What is a hormone?
A chemical produced to prompt a specific response from the body.
What is the pituitary gland?
Known as the master gland, it produces hormones which affect hormone production
What are the two types of hormones?
Water-soluble hormones (hydrophilic hormones made from amino acids) and fat-soluble hormones (hydrophobic hormones made from cholesterol)
Are hormones target specific?
Yes, they need a receptor to bind too
How do you tell how receptive a cell is to a hormone?
The amount of receptors, the more receptors the more sensitive and less receptors less sensitive
What is upreuglation?
A cell is prompted to produce more of a cellular component
What id downregualtion?
A cell is prompted to produce less of a cellular component
Where to hydrophobic hormones bind?
They pass through cells membranes and bind to intracellular receptors
Can hormones have multiple effects on the body?
Yes
Where do hydrophilic hormones bind?
Receptors in the cell’s membrane.
What are the three extracellular receptors hydrophilic hormones bind to?
ion channels, G protein-coupled and tyrosine kinase receptors
