Chapter 16: Transmission and spread of disease Flashcards
What is a endemic?
A disease which occurs at the same rate as the population
What is a epidemic?
An increase in cases which is considered more them normal
What is a pandemic?
Epidemic spread across multiple continents
How does mechanisms of transmission effect the spread?
How to disease spread will effect the amount of people it can go to
How to reduce the spread of a disease?
Increase the population that are immune, eg vaccines
What is morbidity?
The number of people with the disease
What is mortality?
The number of people who died
How does movement help with the spread of disease?
Some communities don’t have an immunity build up, and travel can release pathogen
How can potential outbreaks be predicted?
Extreme events can increase disease, low sanitation, displacement of population etc
What are the strategies to control the spread?
Personal hygiene measures, contact tracing, quarantine, school and workplace closure, temperature screening and travel restrictions
How to predict the modelling of disease spread?
Models and digital disease surveillance
What is digital disease surveillance?
The amount of people who search symptoms along side with confirmed cases
