Chapter 9 (Clinical): Medical Asepsis (Intro Wk) Flashcards
Medical Asepsis
Clean technique - includes procedures used for reducing the number of organisms and preventing their transfer
Surgical Asepsis
Sterile technique - procedures used to eliminate all organisms from an area
What are the six elements in the chain of infection
- Infectious agent or pathogen
- Reservoir or source for pathogen growth
- Portal of exit from the reservoir
- Mode of transmission
- Portal of entry
- Susceptible host
What are some examples of medical asepsis
Hand hygiene, use of PPE, routine environmental cleaning
What is the most important recommendation in evidence based guidelines on how to prevent HAIs
Correctly perform hand hygiene
Is alcohol based products or soap and water more effective for hand hygiene
Alcohol based products are more effective. However use soap and water if hands are visibly soiled or when caring for patients with C-Diff
What is the Tier Two level precaution that the CDC has in place
Tier 1: Standard precautions
Tier 2: transmission based precautions - they are for patients who are known or suspected to be infected or colonized with infectious agents
2nd tier includes precautions designed for care of patients who are known or suspected to be infected, or colonized with microorganisms transmitted by the contact, droplet or airborne route
What are the three types of transmission based precautions
Droplet, contact or airborne
