What is a communication Climate?
The social tone of a relationship and the way people feel about each other as they do activities
How are communication climates established?
They are determined by the degree ti which people see themselves as valued.
Define confirming communication
direct or indirect messages that convey valuing (“You matter to me” “It’s good to see you”
Define Discronfirming communication
Messages that show a lack of regard
What are the types of confirming messages?
- Recognition
- Acknowledgement
- Endorsement
Define Recognition as a confirming message
indicating your awareness of the other person
Define acknowledgement as a confirming message
Paying attention to the ideas and feelings of others “I see your point” “I understand that.” You do not have to agree with the person.
Define endorsement as a confirming message
You agree with or support the other person’s opinions
What are the types of disagreeing messages?
- Argumentativeness
- Complaining
Define argumentativeness as a disagreeing method
presenting and defending positions on issues while opposing positions taken by others. Attacking the message NOT the person.
Define complaining as a disagreeing method
When a person isn’t prepared to argue, but still wants to acknowledge their dissatisfaction.
What are the types of disconfirming messages?
- Aggressiveness

The tendency to attack another person’s character, background or identity.
Define defensiveness
The process of protecting our presenting self

judging another person vs. describing your position without evaluating others.
Define Gibb’s controlling vs. Problem orientation
telling someone what to do vs. working together to find a solution

Disguising your true intentions vs. being upfront and honest with someone
Define neutrality vs. Empathy
Expressing indifference toward someone’s feelings vs. considering the other person’s POV and how they are feeling

sending patronizing messages vs. conveying your respect for the work of others and recognizing that we are all better at different things.

thinking your opinion is always right vs. being open to hearing other’s opinions and ideas

What are the three types of power in relationships?
- Independent

Defien independent power
When neither person in the relationship needs anything from the other
Define Dependent power
When one person in the relationship needs something that the other person can give them
Define Interdependent power
Both parties require something that the other person has. Both control power
Where does power come from?
- Informational sources (knowing something someone else doesn’t)
- Positional sources (power based on resource control)
- Contextual sources (power based on situation and negotiation)
What are the 5 types of power?
- Legitimate power
- Referent power
- Expert Power
- Reward power
- Coercive power
Define Legitimate power
Power that comes with the position you hold in an organization
Define Referent power
Power given based on attractiveness or charisma.
Define Expert power
Power deriving from knowledge.
Define Reward Power
Rewarding or providing a benefit to someone gives you power
Define coercive power
the power to punish or without a reward from someone
