CHAPTER 9 Flashcards

1
Q

to tell
to convey
to deliver

A

전하다

Common Usages:
전해오다 = to pass down

Notes: This word can be used when handing something from one person to another. When used like this, the translation of “deliver” is usually appropriate.

For example:
그 용돈을 아이에게 전해 주세요 = Please give/hand/deliver this allowance/money to the child

It is also used for “words” that are handed from one person to another. When used like this, the translation of “convey” is usually appropriate. For example:

그가 저에게 무슨 말을 전했는지 기억이 안 나요
= I don’t remember what that person told (conveyed to) me

거실을 깨끗하게 정리하고 엄마한테 진심으로 감사하다는 말을 전했다
= We organized the living room (cleanly), and thanked mom from the bottom of our hearts

마음을 전하다 means “tell somebody one’s feeling”

Q

soon

A

금방

곧 vs 금방

you can use 금방 both past, presentand future

but you can use 곧 just future

‘방금’ is more often used for past, and ‘금방’ is more widely used for the future, they both can mean short time preceding, or following the current moment (often interchangeable).

(Interestingly, 今 means ‘now’, and 方 means ‘direction’, hence in the word 방금, the direction is left of now, and in 금방 it is pointing towards the right which is often associated with future.)

‘곧 갈게’ sounds like ‘ i will get there and it will take some time ( not much time )
곧” sounds like you can get there soon but not right away

and if you say ‘금방 갈게’ it sounds ‘ i will get there right now or as soon as possible’
“금방” can be used in the situation that you are able to get there fast
금방 - soon, in a short amount of time, quckly

Q

to keep doing something

to continue

A

계속하다

계속하다”, you can use it when you keep doing sth continuously (in this case, it is the synonym of continue) or you can even use it when you re-start doing sth after break.

for 연속하다, you can say it when one/thing keeps doing sth without stop as i mentioned above.
in short, the word “Continue” means both 연속하다, 계속하다 in korean, and they are very similar. but slightly different in nuance.

계속 = you can stop and do it again
연속 = you can't stop and keep on
