Q

to memorize a word

A

단어를 외우다

Koreans usually use 외우다 more than 암기하다

This is because, 외우다 sounds more soft and friendly in common and normal conversations, I mean… 암기하다 sounds like more formal word like using for tests or some kind of.

ex)
단어를 외우다.
암기 시험

You can use both of them and they have exactly same meaning but I think we tend to use it in noun form ‘암기’ more than in verb form ‘암기하다’. :)

Q

to quit

A

그만두다

그만하다’: You stop something, but you stop it for a while, and later you can start it
‘그만두다’: You get something out of your hands.

Let’s stop practicing and take a break.(for a while)
연습은 그만하고 잠깐 좀 쉬자.(O)
연습은 그만두고 잠깐 좀 쉬자.(X)

I quit studying abroad and went back to my hometown.(out of your hands)
나는 유학 생활을 그만하고 고향으로 돌아갔다.(X)
나는 유학 생활을 그만두

you can say 이제 그만 하자 when breaking up but you never say 이제 멈추자 for it.

  • 멈추다(vi, vt): stop an ongoing movement, operation, or an action. (used of people and machines)
  • 그만하다(vi): stop an action (of people). Not used of vehicles or machines.
  • 그만두다(vt): abandon a plan or intention, or quit an ongoing activity like a job, school, etc.

Q

to look

to recognize

A

알아보다

  1. to look for or seek something
그는 일자리를 알아보고 있다.(He is looking for a job.)
  2. to recognize
그녀는 멀리서 그를 알아볼 수 있었다.(She could recognize him from a distance.)

Sometimes we use both 찾다, 알아보다. For example

I’ll find some information
(내가 정보를 한 번 찾아볼게
내가 정보를 한 번 알아봐 줄게.)
i’ll look into it

But, If you lose something that we can touch or see, 알아보다 is wrong meaning. 찾다 is right. for example

(I’ll find your cell-phone.)
내가 한 번 니 핸드폰을 찾아볼게 (right meaning)
내가 한 번 니 핸드폰을 알아볼게 (wrong)

->because 알다 means ‘something we know
