2
Q

to be young

A

젊다 / 어리다

difference
Picture a 10 year old for 어리다. (Little)

1) young as in legal minors or children;
2) When used in comparative terms (i.e. -보다 어리다), the subjects that are being compared are both young (eg. a 5 y.o is more 어리다 than a 7 y.o.)
3) Young in the sense of being unripe, inexperienced, immature (in a mildly derogatory sense).

Picture a 20 year old for 젊다 (Youthful, but not so little and definitely older than 어리다)

1) young as in people of 20s and 30s, (as opposed to senior citizens who are definitely not 젊다.)
2) When used comparatively, the subjects that are being compared are usually older individuals. (i.e. Between two senior citizens of 70 and 80 y.o. would say that 70 y.o. person is more 젊다 than the 80 y.o.)
3) You would use 젊다(youthful) for people only. For instance a young cow (a calf - 송아지) is referred to as a 어린 송아지 and not a 젊은 송아지.

26
Q

seat

A

자리

Common Usages:
자리가 없다 = there is no place/nowhere to sit/no space
자리가 있다 = there is a place/somewhere to sit/space
자리를 잡다 = to save hold onto a seat
일자리 = a position at work
제자리 = the right/proper place
자리를 뜨다 = to get up from a seat
자리를 차지하다 = to occupy a place, seat

Notes: Incredibly common word that is used in very important situations. 자리 is some area of space, but not really 3-dimensional space. It is more space on the ground or something similar to that. For example, if somebody is standing where you are standing, you could say “get out of my place/my spot!” In that case, you can use 자리. In practice, it is very commonly used to have the meaning “seat”:
