Transport in animals
what is the main transport system in all mammals, including humans?
blood system
what is the blood system known as?
circulatory system
What is the circulatory system?
a network of tubes called blood vessels
what is valves ?
structures that allow a liquid to flow in 1 direction only
What are oxygenated blood?
blood that contains alot of oxygen
Where does oxygenated blood sit?
on the left side
What are deoxygenated blood?
blood containing only a little oxygen
where does deoxygenated blood sit?
on the right side
What is the function of the heart?
to pump blood around the body
In how many pieces are the heart divided into?
4 (called chambers)
what are the upper 2 parts of the heart called?
atria
What are the 2 lower parts of the heart called?
ventricles
What is a septum?
the structure that separates the left & right sides of the heart
what are pulmonary veins?
the veins that carry oxygenated blood to the left atrium
what is venae cavae?
the large vein that bring deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
What is pulmonary artery?
the artery that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
What is coronary arteries?
vessels that deliver oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
What does the heart constantly need?
a supply of nutrients & oxygen to undergo aerobic respiration
What is coronary heart disease(CHD)?
disease causes by blockage of the coronary arteries
How do you prevent CHD disease?
- do not smoke
2.good diet
3.regular exercise
what is a good way to measure the rate of your heartbeat?
pulse rate
in a hospital, how can you heartrate be recorded?
by a ECG(a graph showing the elctrical activity of the heart)
what are the 3 kinds of blood vessels?
1.arteries
2.capillaries
3. veins
what does arteries do?
carry blood away from the heart
