Chapter 3 Flashcards
Movement in & out of cells
What are all living things made of?
atoms,ions & molecules
What are particles?
smallest pieces of which a substance are made
How does particles work?
the higher the temprature, the faster they move
Why does paricles move faster a higher temperatures?
more kinetic energy
What does diffusion mean?
the net movement of particles
How does particles move in a solid substance?
they cannot move very far [held together by attractive forces
]
How does particles move in a liquid?
they can move more freely [but stay in contact with each other]
What are molecules & ions?
a liquid
what happens with gases/solutions/mixtures of liquids?
they can move freely, particles spread themselves out as evenly as they can
Why does diffusion happen?
the molecules move randomly
What is net movement?
overall or average movement
What is a high concentration of molecules?
a place where a lot of molecules are close together
How many % of water is in some organisms bodies?
80%
Is water molecules very small or big?
very small
What are water moelcules made of?
2 hydrogen atoms & 1 water atom
What does compound mean?
substance formed by the chemical combination of 2 or more elements
what does osmosis mean?
diffusion of water through a partically permeable membrane
what does osmosis mean in water potential?
net movement of water molecules from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution
what does high water potential mean?
area where theres alot of water molecules [dilute solution]
What does low water potentail mean?
area where theres not many water molecules [concentrated solution]
What does water potential gradient mean?
difference in water potential between 2 areas
What is the solvent in a sugar solution?
water
What is the solute in a sugar solution?
sugar
What is a solvent?
a liquid that is able to dissolve a solid
