Chapter 12 Flashcards
Coordination & response
What does stimuli mean?
changes in the enviroment that can be detected by organisms
What is receptors?
cells or groups of cells that detect stimuli
What is effetors?
parts of the body that respond to a stimulus
Give 2 examples to effectors?
muscles
glands
How do muscles respond to stimulus?
by contracting
What does coordination mean?
ensuring that the actions of different parts of the body work together
name the 2 ways animals send info from receptors to effectors?
1.fastest: nerves
2.slower: hormones
What are nerves?
a group of neurone axons lying together
What are the human nervous system made of?
special cells called,neurones
What is the largest fibre in a neurone called?
axon
What are the shorter fibers in a neurone called?
dendrites
What are nerve impulses?
an electrical signal that passes rapidly along an axon
What is a neurone?
a cell that is specialized for conducting electrical impulses
What does all mammals have?
central nervous system (CNS)
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is a central nervous system?
the brain & the spinal cord
What is a peripheral nervous system?
the nerves outside the brain & spinal cord
What is a sensory neurone?
a neurone that transmits electrical impulses from the receptor to the central nervous system
What is a relay neurone?
a neurone that transmits electrical impulses within the central nervous system
what is a reflex arc?
a series of neurones that transmits electrical impulses from a receptor>effector
name the 3 neurones involved in a reflex arc?
sensory neurone
motor neurone
relay neurone
What is a reflex action?
the reaction that happens after the impulse has sped around the reflex arc
What kind of action is a reflex action?
automatic actions
What is a synaptic gap?
tiny gap between 2 neurones
What is a synapse?
a junction between 2 neurones
