Chapter 1 Flashcards
Characteristics of living organisms
What is movement?
an action by a organism causing a change of position or place
What is respiration?
chemical reactions that break down molecules to release energy for metabolism
What is sensitivity?
ability to sense or detect stimuli in the internal/external enviroment
What is growth?
permanent increase in size & dry mass
What is reproduction?
process of making more of the same kind of organism
What is nutrition?
the taking in of materials for energy, growth & development
What is a species?
a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring
How can species be classified into groups?
by the features they share
How do you identify the 2 scientific names in the binomial system?
genus: always given a capital letter
species: always have a small letter
What are the 5 animal kingdoms?
- animals
- plants
- fungi
- protoctists

What are the 3 main features of all animals?
- multicellular
- cells contain a nucleus, but no cell walls or chloroplasts
- feed by organic substances
What are the 3 main features of all plants?
- multicellular
- cells contain nucleus, chloroplasts & cellulose cell walls
- feed by photosynthesis
what is vertebrates?
animals with a backbone
What is invertebrates?
animals with no backbone
