Chapter 6 Flashcards
Plant nutrition
What is the process called where plants make carbohydrates?
photosynthesis
What is the photosythesis equation?
carbon dioxide + water = glucose + water
What does photosythesis depend on to help things take place?
enzymes
name 7 ways a plant uses carbohydrates?
- release useful energy
- storing ( use it for later)
- making sucrose ( for transport)
- making cellulose ( to build cell walls)
- making nectar ( to attract pollinators)
- Making amino acids ( to make proteins)
- Making other substances ( e.g. chlorophyll)
How do plants store energy?
turn glucose into starch
are starch molecules soluble in water?
no
What do plants not do?
transport glucose
How does plants transport energy?
change glucose into a sugar wiith larger molecules, called sucrose
What is sucrose?
a sugar whose moelcules are made of glucose & another similar molecule(fructose) linked together
What must a growing plant do?
make cellulose molecules to form cell walls
what does flowers produce?
nectar that animals feed on
what does nectar contain?
different kinds of sugars, all made from glucose
How do plants make amino acids?
glucose made in photosynthesis
What does plants need to make amino acids?
a source of nitrogen
Where do plants get their nitrogen from?
soil
What happens if a plant doesnt get enough nitrate ions?
it will not grow quickly or strongly
Where does photosynthesis happen inside a plant?
inside chloroplasts
Where are the most chloroplasts in a plant?
the leaves
Where in the plant is the “factory of making carbohydrates”?
the leaf
What are inside a leaf?
collections of parallel tubes called cascular bundles
What are vascular bundles?
form the veins in a leaf and carries substances to the leaf
How many % of air in a plant is carbon dioxide?
0.04
How are leaves structured?
large surface area & are very thin
what is the 2 advantage that plants have because of their large surface area?
- allows large amount of sunlight to fall onto the leaf
- increases the rate at which carbon dioxide can diffuse
