Chapter 11 Flashcards
Respiration & gas exchange
name the 7 things our cells need energy for?
1.contracing muscles
2.making protein moelcules
3.cell division
4. active transport
5.growth
6.transmitting nerve impulses
7.producing heat inside the body
What is the main nutrient that gives us energy?
glucose
What is a aerobic respiration?
chemical reactions that takes place in the mitochondria
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen» carbon dioxide + water
What is a anaerobic respiration?
chemical reactions that releases energy without using oxygen
how does aerobic respiration work?
release energy from glucose by combing it with oxygen
what is yeast?
a single celled fungus that respires anaerobically(breaks down glucose to alcohol
What is the anaerobic respiration equation for yeast?
glucose» alcohol + carbon dioxide
What is the anaerobic respiration equation for the body?
glucose»lactic acid
what is gas exchange?
the diffusion of oxygen & carbon dioxide into & out of the body
What are a gas exchange surface?
part of the body where gas exchange between the body & envirment take place
name 4 ways that could help the process of gas exchange be quick & effient?
1.good supply of oxygen
2.large surface area
3.close to an effient transport system
4.they are thin
What is a alveoli?
tiny air-filled sacs in the lungs where gas exchange happens
Where does the oxygen diffuse into the blood?
in the alveoli
What is a trachea?
the tube through which air travels to the lungs
What is a thorax?
the chest,(the part of the body from the neck down to the diaphram)
What is a bronchus?
1 of 2 tubes that takes air from the trachea into the lungs
what is a bronchiole?
a small tube that takes air from a bronchus to every part of the lungs
What are the 4 features the walls of alveoli has to make them an effient gas exchange surface?
1.they are very thin
2.excellent transport system
3.large surface area
4.good oxygen supply
what is ventilation?
the movement in & out of the lungs
how much % of oxygen is in inspired air?
21%
How much % of carbon dioxide is in inspired air?
0.04%
How much % of water vapour is in inspired air?
variable
How much % of oxygen is in expired air?
16%
