Chapter 5 Flashcards
Enzymes
How can chemical reactions be sped up?
by a substance called, catalysts
What does catalysts do?
alters the rate of chemical reactions
by what are all metabolic reactions controlled by?
enzymes
What would happen without enzymes?
reactions would take place very slowly or not at all
What are enzymes?
proteins that are involved in metabolic reactions
How are reactions sped up?
by enzymes
What is amylase?
a enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of starch to sugars[maltose]
What is protease?
the breakdown of protein to amino acids
What is catalase?
the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to water & oxygen
What are the 6 enzymes called?
1 amylase
2 protease
3 catalase
4 lipases
5 maltase
6 sucrase
What does lipases mean?
enzymes that breakdown fats & oils
What is maltase?
the breakdown of maltose to glucose
What is sucrase?
an enzyme that breaks down sucrose
What is the substance called that an enzyme changes?
substrate
What is a product?
the new substance formed by a chemical reaction
What is the 2 things enzymes are sensitive to?
tempreture & pH
What does optimum mean?
the tempreture at which activity is greatest
What can hight tempreture or different pH cause in enzymes?
to change shape & denature
