Epidemic
An outbreak of a rapidly spreading disease.
Black Death
An epidemic of the bubonic plague that ravaged Europe in the 1300s. 1/3 of the people died.
Inflation
An economic cycle that involves a rapid rise in prices linked to a sharp increase in the amount of money available.
Schism
A permanent division in a church.
Longbow
A six-foot-long bow that could rapidly fire arrows with enough force to pierce most armor.
Heresy
A religious belief that is contrary to the official teachings of a church.
Joan of Arc
A 17-year old peasant women who appeared at the court of Charles VII, the uncrowned king of France in 1429. She told him that God sent her to save France and the desperate Charles authorized her to lead an army against the English. To Charles’s amazement, she led the French to several victories in a year. However, she was captured by allies of the English, and turned over to her enemies for trial. They tried her for witchcraft and after conviction, she was burned at the stake. Much later, the Church declared her a saint.
Hundred Years War
A series of conflicts between England and France from 1337 and 1453.
