Sacrament

Having to do with worldly, rather than religious, matters.
Papal Supremacy
The claim of medieval popes that they had authority over all secular rulers.
Canon Law
The body laws of a church.
Excommunication
Exclusion from the Roman Catholic Church as a penalty for refusing to obey Church law.
Interdict
In the Roman Catholic Church, excommunication of an entire region, town, or kingdom.
Friar
A medieval European monk who traveled from place to place preaching to the poor.
St. Francis of Assisi
Founded the first order of friars, the Franciscans. Giving up his comfortable life, he devoted himself to preaching the Gospels and teaching by his own example of good works.
Pilgrimage
Religious journeys.
Baptism
Marked entrance into the community of the church.
Monastery
Places where monks lived and prayed as well as places of work and study.
Convent
Places where monks and nuns devoted their entire lives to spiritual goals.
