Clovis
A king who established one of many Germanic kingdoms that replaced the unifying force of the Roman Empire in Western Europe.
Medieval
From the Latin words for “Middle Ages,” this was a period between the Fall of Rome and the Renaissance from roughly 500 to 1500.
Franks
A Germanic tribe that conquered parts of France and neighboring lands in the 400s.
Charles Martel
Rallied Frankish warriors against the Muslim army when they crossed into France at the battle of Tours in 732.
Battle of Tours
A battle in 732 in which Christian Franks led by Charles Martel stopped the Muslim advance further into western Europe.
Charlemagne
Grandson of Charles Martel who became king of the Franks in 768 and briefly united Western Europe. He was named Charles and became known as Charlemagne or Charles the Great.
Magyars
Nomadic people who settled in present-day Hungary in about 900. They overran eastern Europe and moved on to plunder Germany, parts of France, and Italy.
Vikings
Scandinavian peoples whose sailors raided Europe from the 700s to the 1100s. They were also traders and explorers who sailed around the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic Ocean.
Dark Ages
A period of political, social, and economic decline after the collapse of Rome.
Gaul
Present-day France.
Alcuin
A respected scholar of York who was brought in by Charlemagne to direct the Palace School. He created a curriculum that became a center of learning and lively discussion. His system would become the educational model for medieval Europe.
Aachen
The place where Charlemagne had a court to try and revive the glory of Rome.
Pope Leo III
In 799, he asked Charlemagne for help against rebellious nobles in Rome. After Charlemagne arrested Leo’s opponents, the pope showed his gratitude by placing a crown on Charlemagne’s head and proclaiming him Emperor of the Romans.
Scandinavia
The home of the Vikings; a northern region that now includes Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
